Resume Headline Examples That Get You the Interview

The resume headline is the most-overlooked section on a resume — and the easiest to fix. One line, the right formula, a real number. Here are 50 examples across every major industry.

Headline vs. Objective — Why the Headline Wins

Both sit at the top of your resume. Only one survives the 6-second scan.

Resume Headline

One bold line. 6-12 words. Signals your title, differentiator, and a metric instantly. ATS-friendly. Readable at a glance. Works for all experience levels.

Resume Objective

2-3 sentences. Explains what you want. Employer-focused phrasing often backfires. Still useful for career changers and new grads — but harder to scan quickly.

Objective (Weaker)

"Seeking a challenging marketing position at a dynamic company where I can leverage my skills to contribute to team success and grow professionally."

Headline (Stronger)

"Growth Marketing Manager | SEO + Paid Acquisition | $0 to $2M ARR in 18 Months"

The 3-Part Headline Formula

Every high-performing headline follows this structure. Learn it once, apply it everywhere.

[Job Title] | [Differentiator / Specialty] | [Metric / Proof Point]

Part 1: Job Title

Use the exact title from the job posting. ATS systems match on title keywords. 'Senior Product Manager' beats 'Seasoned PM' every time.

Part 2: Differentiator

Your specialty, tools, or focus area. This is what separates you from 100 other applicants with the same title. Be specific.

Part 3: Metric

One number that proves you deliver. Revenue, percentage lift, scale, rating, time saved. If you have it, lead with it. Numbers stop scanners.

How to Customize Your Headline for Each Job

A generic headline is a missed opportunity. Here is how to tailor in under 5 minutes.

1
Pull the exact job title from the posting

Copy it verbatim — not your paraphrase. If the posting says 'Senior Product Designer' and you write 'Experienced UX Designer,' ATS may not count it as a match.

2
Identify the top 2 required skills

Scan the first 3 bullets of the job description. The skills listed first are the ones they care about most. Work one or two into your differentiator slot.

3
Pick your most relevant metric

You may have many numbers — choose the one that speaks to this role. Applying for a revenue-growth role? Use revenue. Applying for an engineering role? Use scale or reliability metrics.

4
Assemble and check length

Aim for 8 to 12 words. Read it aloud — if it sounds like a sentence, trim it. Headlines are phrases, not sentences. No periods.

Common Headline Mistakes to Avoid

These show up on 80% of resumes. Avoid them and you already stand out.

Buzzword salad

Results-driven, passionate, dynamic, innovative — these words appear on millions of resumes and mean nothing to a recruiter or ATS. Replace with a specific title and a real number.

No metric

A headline without a number is just a job title. Recruiters see hundreds of Product Managers. '147% Quota Attainment' stops a scroll. If you have a number, use it.

Too long

Headlines over 15 words lose impact and may not format cleanly in ATS systems. If yours is running long, cut the differentiator down to the 2 most relevant tools or skills.

Using the wrong title

If the posting says 'Growth Marketing Analyst' and you write 'Digital Marketer,' you lose the ATS title match. Mirror the posting's language exactly, even if your current title differs.

Skipping the headline entirely

Many applicants jump from name to summary and waste the highest-visibility section of their resume. A well-placed headline increases scan time by an average of 4 additional seconds.

Personal pronouns

Headlines are titles, not sentences. Avoid 'I am a' or 'Experienced professional who...' — start with the job title itself. Lean, bold, title-case or sentence-case.

Where the Headline Lives on Your Resume

Placement and formatting matter as much as the words themselves.
